Sad news for shawarma lovers as the European Parliament is planning to ban the phosphates necessary to keep the seasoned kebab meat moist and flavorful.

Shawarmas are everyone’s favorite; and is available at every corner in the region. However, for those who have traveled to European countries, you may have found the friendly ‘Halaal’ Shawarma everywhere. The combination of pickled veggies, pita, and meat is a hit and people can’t get enough of it!

The EU lawmakers are concerned about the health based on studies that linked phosphates to cardiovascular disease. The change in the EU rules has enraged takeaways and fast-food enthusiasts.

Some vendors have called it a discrimination to deliberately target the doner-kebab businesses. Renate Sommer, a member of German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s conservative party in the European Parliament, took to Facebook to share his views on the issue. “A ban of the phosphate addition would be the end of shawarma production and would lead to the loss of thousands of jobs.”

So Shawarma is officially going to be banned in Europe!
